One in, two, three and then some more and then another,
Doesn't seem to make the hole smaller, worth the bother,
It's hard to start again once the gap has widened so,
throw each pebble in, kerplop, so many more to go.
Still not to start, not to try, would be the higher crime,
Delay just puts it off, defeated I won't resign,
And so I reach for one more to toss into the maw,
Let loose and hurl, watch the arc obeying Newton's law,
Await report and silence comes, long, drawn out, too long,
At near hope's end a quiet echo begins, not strong,
The weak reply of rock on rock is enough for now,
To give strength for one more stone, I'll fill this thing somehow,
And thus is how I proceed as day does follow night,
Stone by stone, lot by lot, by sun, candle and star light,
Hopeless task, it may be posed, to n'er e'er see progress,
But hope remains, stubbornly clinging to this address,
And as each lob shows no increment of betterment,
The motion sustains, putters on, the drive long since spent,
Why do we do what we do when all tells of no gain,
Do we flee, give up and go or do we stand the pain,
That's what makes us who we are, our most important card,
Of all the pieces of our make, it's the truest shard,
The toughest of all tests tough, when all else is destroyed,
Do we run or tough it out and stand and fill the void?
